Note: the composer’s interest in South Asian classical music, a tradition in which this concerto is grounded due to the heritage of its illustrious subject, began with the Cultures in Harmony project in 2009 in Pakistan and continued with the composer’s employment in Afghanistan from 2010-2014 and his residency at the Mehli Mehta Music Foundation (at the invitation of Zubin Mehta) in Mumbai, India, in 2015. He studied South Asian classical music with Ahmad Sarmast, Abhishek and Murchana Adhikary, Gaurav Mazumdar, and Homayoun Sakhi, among others.
